Frequently Asked Questions
What can I expect from a shoot? Hopefully a lot of fun! I look at photography as being a collaborative process. We’ll work together to create images both of us will be proud to display. This covers most of the basics, but if you have other concerns not covered here do not hesitate to contact us.
About the Package
Time Commitment. Plan on the shoot taking roughly 30 minutes. I’ll be set up and ready to go when you arrive so we can hit the ground running.
I split my headshot shoots into two parts: the first is the classic headshot, where we capture the looks that will make you look like the superstar you are in your chosen field. This takes approximately 15-20 minutes.
After we have achieved the goal of the shoot–and time permitting–I like to shift gears and get creative. This is where you and I can play a bit and create some fun portraits that might look great on your wall but not on a business card. This is entirely optional and outside the normal shoot.
Fun fact: a surprising number of clients include one or more of these “playtime” images in their final selection!
Background. I use either white or gray seamless for my headshots. The choice of color is up to you.
Number of Looks. We can easily shoot up to three looks in a 30 minute session. However, plan for one look and bring an additional top or two, just in case time permits.
Retouching and editing. I will do basic color correction, toning, and light retouching on your favorite three images. We will discuss retouching desires at the end of the shoot, but my basic process is to remove stray hairs, random lint, and any blemishes that will fade within a week. More extensive retouching (e.g. wrinkle removal, digitally applied or corrected makeup, etc.) is available at $50.00 per image.
The You that is sitting before me is the best possible You you can be, so what I deliver will look like You.
Your Print. Every client receives a professionally printed 11″x14″ print of their favorite image. Why do I include a physical print with every session? In the words of platinum photograph master Tillman Crane:
“The print is an idea made visible. For my process, a photograph isn’t a photograph until it’s a print. I love the physical presence of a print, from beginning to end. For me it’s a tactile, sensual experience. I want it to be an object of beauty, whether the subject moves you or not.”
This can either be a full 11″x14″ print (some cropping will be required) or a windowed 8×10 or 8×12 image with a white border (my preference). In either case, it will arrive directly from the lab ready to be dropped into your favorite frame.
Styrene mounting available for an additional $15.00.
Meet and greet. Whenever possible I like to meet with my clients at least once over coffee or other suitable beverage of choice to go over the contract and discuss the goals of the shoot. It gives you a chance to get to know me a bit and decide if our personalities mesh before committing to the shoot.
Deposit and payment. 50% of the session fee is due at the time of scheduling, with the balance and any additional costs (retouching and mounting) due the day of the session.
Styling. All of my shoots are come-as-you-are. If you would like a stylist or make-up artist it is your responsibility to provide them at your own cost.
Pet Allergies. I have four cats, of which you will most likely only see one (the rest run and hide when guests come over). If you have pet allergies let me know in advance and I’ll travel to your home or work.
Additional Non-Participants. Clients may bring one additional person with them for styling help, companionship, moral support, etc. This is entirely at your discretion, but I certainly do not fault anyone who wants to make personal comfort and safety a priority!
That said, if the additional person disrupts the shoot they will be asked to leave.
Post-Shoot. In one week I will post a selection of images for your delectation on my website. They will be fully processed, but not retouched. The link is private and password protected.
Simply select the images you desire and I will provide you with lightly retouched full-size jpegs (approximately 15mb per image) of those images via a Dropbox link. You will also receive duplicate copies sized for social media (roughly 1200px on the long end).
Will you travel for a shoot? Yes. Within 50 miles it is part of the package. Beyond 50 miles will incur additional costs that will be added to the package price.
Will you shoot my pet/kid/wedding/engagement? No.
But you’re a photographer! Why not? Simply put: those areas are not where my strengths lie and I’d be doing you a disservice by shooting something I’m not familiar with. Fortunately there are plenty of excellent photographers who specialize in that type of photography.
Will you shoot me for free? No. Maybe. Look, it’s complicated.
But think of the exposure! This is technically not a question, but “exposure” doesn’t pay the bills.
So expand on “maybe.” If there is something outside my usual style that intrigues me or would push my creative boundaries, I’d consider it. It’s a level playing field, though; we both have to get something out of it.
Can I get a print for free? No.
At cost? No. A physical print isn’t expensive. The expensive part is everything that went into making it. That includes: the cost of the cameras and lenses, lighting and modifiers, travel, processing time, insurance, bookkeeping, website hosting, continuing education, etc.
My prints from Japan, for example, start at $130.00. Round trip airfare was approximately $1,800.00. Traveling to Japan is expensive and the pricing of my prints reflects that.
